Prof. Mario Aquilina has completed a series of creative writing workshops as part of the Essays Beyond Borders project, focusing on the theme of essay and place. These workshops were delivered across five post-secondary institutions in Malta: St. Martin’s College, Gian Frangisk Abela Junior College, St Aloysius College, De La Salle College, and Giovanni Curmi Higher Secondary.
A total of ten workshop series were held between March 2024 and March 2025, each consisting of three to four hours of contact time. In total, 166 students participated in these sessions. The workshops offered students the opportunity to explore place as a theme in essay writing, encouraging personal and reflective engagement.
Students were invited to submit essays developed during or after the sessions. Detailed individual feedback was provided to support and guide the writing process. A selection of the strongest essays was chosen for publication on the project’s website, offering students public recognition for their work. In addition, prizes were awarded to the top essays received.
