Slovene Writers’ Association

The Slovene Writers’ Association (SWA) is a voluntary, independent and non-profit organisation that serves and furthers the professional, social and cultural interests of Slovene writers. The activities of the Association encompass the entire Slovenian cultural space regardless of state borders. The SWA defends, under existing legislation and in accordance with its own nearly a century-and-a-half old tradition, both creative freedom and the position of Slovene literature and its writers. The Association participates in developing laws regulating authors’ moral, material, social and rights, among others. It organizes readings, lectures and meetings, and takes part in cultural events and activities (publishing, librarianship, printing, film, theatre, artistic awards etc.) both at home and abroad. The Slovene Writers’ Association was originally founded on 21 April 1872 in Ljubljana. At present, it has more than 300 members who are all published writers with at least two books to their credit. More information is available at Slovene Writers’ Association (drustvo-dsp.si).

The essay workshops will be held at the headquarters of SWA, Tomšičeva 12, Ljubljana, in consequent sessions, each one held at a same day of the week. They will be aimed at students, journalists, critics and everybody interested in essay writing, amateur or professional, and limited to no more than 12 participants in each of the two workshops. In case of more applications, selection will be made by the organizing committee on the basis of the rough texts sent by the participants with intention to be published as essays in the future.

First session will present the methods of work followed by a lecture on difference between academic writing and essayistic writing. The participants will present their ideas on the essays they will be creating. Next sessions will be dedicated to the work-in-progress essays by the participants. An established essayist will be giving comments and guidelines to the texts, along with the comments of other participants. The final session will be discussing the modifications made in submitted essays and their success.
